Sammy Engramer

Objects of the 20th century

18 - 20 June 2011

As part of the Arts and Culture department, the students of the master's degree “Contemporary Art Exhibition & Production” course, curated an exhibition by the artist Sammy Engramer at the gallery “Les 3 Lacs”.

His artistic practice is focused on sculpture and the creation of “works of art with various layers". His conceptual, burlesque and derisory practice refers to both Surrealism and Conceptual Art. For this exhibition, the artist experimented with the idea of “works in the future tense”. The objects exhibited are formally close to emblematic works of the 20th century. Thus, Urinoirnoir, Maison Blanche, Armleder's guitare, Socle blanc are a rereading of these art historical classics in the light of our time.

Objets du XXe siècle evokes two concepts: the White Cube and the Ready-made. The “white cube” defines the space of the modern gallery, which has the function of guaranteeing the work of art its character as a cultural commodity, and the “ready-made” which, according to Marcel Duchamp, is an “everyday object promoted to the dignity of an art object by the simple choice of the artist”. Thus, in this exhibition Sammy Engramer asks the following question: “How has the manufactured object become the symbol of contemporary art, and to what extent has the white cube contributed to reinforcing this symbol?”
