Hullabaloo

2008 - 2010

The commission

The Regional centre for the Environment and Solidarity, is a not for profit organisation which was created in 1978. Its members are the associations which are active in nature, environment, solidarities and human rights. The aim of the commission was to open up the MRES to a wider audience and for it to affirm its identity and values as a regional network. As a sign of opening up to new audiences, the work was to give a stronger and more comprehensive image of the activities of the network and to invite the public to approach the different associations.

The artwork

As a response to the MRES commission, Qubo Gas proposed Hullabaloo, a digital work: an evolving landscape, a graphic microcosm. The work has two forms : a computer programme based on the Internet and an installation to be presented in contemporary art contexts and whereever the MRES present their activities, such as at fairs and exhibitions.
The work is based on the notion of network and is inspired by a system of simple life structure in order for the landscapes to evolve. Several landscape zones are defined and created element by element thanks to a system of cooperation between individuals of different communities. The graphic elements which constitute these landscapes multiply and fuse to constitute a hybrid territory in perpetual mutation.

The artist

Qubo Gas is a collective of artists, Laura Henno, Jef Ablézot and Morgan Dimnet, created in 2000 and based in Lille. They have a range of practice: illustration, "wall drawing", digital animation, interactive programmes, performance, and installation. Their work is based on drawing that is sometimes confronted with the computer. The hand-drawn and computer technologies merge and intermingle according to the project. Qubo Gas develop a graphic line which has as its base a surreal universe moving between abstraction and figuration Chaotic, foisonant landscapes, explosive microcosms, wild gardens constitute an abstract and imaginary environment where a fragile and poetic atmosphere reigns.
