Louise Hopkins's paintings are implemented starting from 'surfaces' that already exist, primarily furnishing fabrics, turned over and worked. Different parts of the printed material, usually a floral English-style fabric, are repainted in oils, using very fine paint brushes, in an extremely long-winded and meticulous procedure. The artist makes one think of the work and patience of copyist monks. These additions are faithful to the original, Louise Hopkins uses the fabric as pattern.

Another closely associated component of her work involves the scores of sentimental songs. These paintings are elegant, a blend of popular culture and minimal painting. Totally unconcerned wih making any autobiographical statement, the supports from everyday life, derrived from popular traditions, serve as platforms for a different way of exploring painting, for the transformation of one aesthetic into another.
