Hugo Kostrzewa

Sharawaggi

2015 - 2016

The commission

The students elected to the Conseil des délégués pour la vie lycéenne and the Première L2 students, plastic arts option, at the Lycée Pasteur, judging the school bell to be boring and monotonous, commissioned an artist to create a work that could be a "sound puzzle" signal that would at the same time provoke surprise, liveliness, poetry and appeasement. With this request, they showed their ambition to participate in the life of their highschool in a positive way, taking responsibility for a project that gives rhythm to everyone's daily life.

The work

The suggested artist, Hugo Kostrzewa, has created Sharawaggi, a luxuriant sound environment, deploying over the course of the day in the corridors of the establishment. Combinations of more or less familiar sounds: raw sensory evocations, snippets of exotic melodic scales, reminiscences of sounds from our current information and communication tools... Resulting from a reflection on the impact of the sound environment on humans, the work questions the imagination of each person and offers the possibility of a new experience every day.

The artist

Hugo Kostrzewa explores sound in relation to taste, affect and intellect. He appeals to our memories, our imagination, as well as our capacity to be carried away in a narrative tinged with collective history, popular references and folklore. In his installations and performances, sound and taste are used as familiar and intriguing cues serving a strange entertainment. He creates immersive experiences where the spectator receives the work in the singularity and complexity of their sensory perception.
