Marjorie Van Halteren
Cage Music and Deliciousity
residency in July and August 2009, event 26 - 27 March 2010
artconnexion invited Marjorie Van Halteren in residence in the project space at 9 rue du Cirque during the summer of 2009.
« I intend to use the space as a kind of canvas - by what, I don't really mean the walls, but the space itself.
I would like to create what I think of as a kind of "jewel box theatre": a space to welcome a very small audience (probably normally 1-4 spectators at time- obviously more during an opening or other event) where they can listen comfortably and intendly.
The space will be transformed by 5.1 sound (for now, using a small home cinema set-up that I have, with the speakers hidden), and the light coming from the projector. Along with the sounds that I will record and treat, images that I photograph myself will be used, or possibly video (I have a small video camera available). The piece should be approximately 4-6 minutes in length.
I'm not sure what the room is yet - it could be a classroom of the memory, a bedroom, a small bird cage... it should be a place with walls, not a forest, for example. »
Extract from the report of Marjorie Van Halteren, 2009
After her residency, Marjorie Van Halteren took over the video space on the first floor. Over a weekend in March 2010, she invited viewers to discover a brand new production called Cage Music, a recording of the voice of a parrot mixed with different noises. In the continuity of her research and experiments, Marjorie Van Halteren has also developed a joint project with the artist Hugo Kostrzewa. Over the weekend, they offered the public a performance in several stages around sound, sound effects, vocals and accent ... especially American. Between the recording studio and the theater stage, the artists play, discuss French and American cultures and share with the public their idea of "sound".
