Anne-Émilie Philippe

Residency in Japan

October 2018

Artist Anne-Émilie Philippe was selected by artconnexion for a residency in Japan in October 2018.

"I continued to discover the use of paper, this time in a broader sense, in everyday life by visiting different places: temples, museums, markets. The folding techniques are integrated into the objects, down to the most trivial ones, and show a keen sense of detail and attention to everyday objects.

I also visited the paper museum and the kite museum in Tokyo. A project to make picture kites is underway and I will use traditional techniques to make them. I have brought back the bamboo sticks that will be used for various experiments.

I also have a project for a series of prints on textile inspired by stone gardens. The patterns made with a rake would be transcribed directly on the screen-printing screens. The miegakure (hide and reveal) used in the construction of Japanese gardens will be the starting point for a work on images (appearance and disappearance).

Moreover, as soon as I got back from the Xmas Pop Up exhibition at artconnexion, I made furoshiki.

Generally speaking, the diversity of textile printing and dyeing techniques from natural elements (khaki, indigo...), as well as the many traditional motifs that result from them, make me want to experiment and divert these skills on paper and fabric in order to integrate them into different projects. These contributions, which for the moment seem plastic, are essential and will be articulated in contextual projects that a future stay will allow me to develop."
