Michel Couturier
Périphéries
29 September - 30 October 2001
Michel's Couturier film is part of a project that has several components : a video, posters that can be seen in several French and Belgian towns, and a edition of postcards. This group of works is centred on the interest Couturier has taken for fifteen years or so in peripheral spaces- approaches to shopping centres, motorway parking areas and other places people pass through or stay in.
These spaces are a simulacrum of urbanity, put at the service of a system of economic relations. Michel Couturier has chosen them as the setting for a film to come; this video can be taken as the trailer, with the posters and postcards snapshots of the shooting or preparatory elements that take the form of works.
Couturier establishes a crossroads, with multiple potentialities, between the set and two characters borrowed from Greek mythology: Nuée, the nymph, and Ixion, the warrior, whose dialogue deals with relationships to the world, including social and class relationships.
Various possibilities of reading are thus generated while the absolute shift between text and image gives rise to a kind of libertarian poetic space of works (castings, computer graphics tests, a few filmed scenes), while posters will appear in a few French and Belgian cities, opposing an open text (cf. below) and an image taken in this characteristic societal context.
The aim is a form of strategy in the face of the world. It is a question of diverting, of piercing this simulacrum of urbanity by other simulation processes, this time in the form of cinema. The latter is itself a remake of De la Nuée à la Résistance, directed by the French filmmakers Jean-Marie Straub and Danielle Huillet from two texts by Cesare Pavese (Dialogues with Leuco and The Moon and the Fires).
